Principal’s June 2018 newsletter
Dear Adam Beck Parents:
As the school year ends with so many great moments and memories, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of the staff at Adam Beck. As each and every staff member continue to provide the best educational experiences for your children to help them reach their full potential. I am also grateful for the partnership we have with our supportive parent community. It has been such a pleasure working with such a committed and dedicated community. My job has been made so much easier because of all of your collective efforts. I am extremely proud to say that I am the Principal at Adam Beck.
This time of year brings both happy and sad endings and new beginnings. We would like to say goodbye to our EA – Mr. Carmelo Caruna. We will be saying goodbye to our wonderful LTO (Long Term Occasional teachers) Ms. Rochelle Christopher our Kindergarten teacher and Mr. Ryan McBurry our FI Grade 5/6. We would like to wish Ms. Rachel Watson all the best in her new school at Grenoble PS, Ms. Jessica Ovalles who will be going to Howard PS. Lastly, we say goodbye and best wishes to Mrs. Dorothy Willms our Grade 5/6 teacher who will be retiring after 35 years in the TDSB who has started her retirement and thank her for many years of service with the Toronto District School Board. We wish her a happy and healthy retirement.
We would like to welcome the following teachers: Mr. Brett Quance Grade 2/3 and Ms. Alison Nason Grade 3/4 and Mr. George Abd El Sayed FI Grade 5/6.
We say goodbye and best wishes to all of the Adam Beck families moving on and we also welcome many new families into this wonderful community. For all of the new Kindergarten to Grade 6 families, please join us on September 4th, 2018 in the school yard (Lawlor side) by 8:45 a.m. for entry. Kindergarten families’ will report to the Kindergarten yards according to the Report Card. Room 7, 8 and 9 will report to the yard on Scarborough Road and Room 23 and 24 report to the newer yard near the field. Staff will be waiting with class lists to help direct you to your child’s teacher and classroom.
The Adam Beck Eco-Team with the help of all the students, families and teachers at Adam Beck has had another wonderful year! Adam Beck has been awarded the Platinum Certificate for our efforts to reduce our energy use and waste as well as our support of endangered animals. This year thanks to our delicious bake sales we raised $2746 for the Rain Coast Conservation Foundation in B.C. to help endangered ocean animals. Thanks to the generous support of the Parent Council Outreach Program we were able to donate $500 to the Earth Rangers Foundation after their great school wide assembly in May. The used books that were left over from our sale were donated to The Children’s Book Bank as well as $200 from the Parent Council Outreach Program.
Finally, our beautiful No Littering signs are completed and look fantastic! One is up on the South side of the Woodbine Bathing Change rooms at Woodbine Beach. The other will be going up around our school.
New families to Adam Beck will receive and email informing them of their child’s class assignment in the next week.
We wish our Grade 6 graduates all the best in their journey to middle school. They most recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to Ottawa and activities this year in Junglesport, Ski Trip and the X-Movement program. I hope they will take this with them as one of the great memories from their elementary school. A special thank you to all the Grade 6 parents who worked endlessly to make the Graduation event such a special one for their children, truly a fantastic experience.
We are finally coming close to the point in the school year where we have firmed up our staff and staffing assignments for next year. Please keep in mind that re-organization is always possible in September should our student population increase or decrease. The assignments listed here are based on our June student numbers. If the placement that appears on your child’s Report Card should change in September you will be notified as soon as possible. Please note that the class your child has been assigned to is a firm decision that took into account many factors including the importance of balancing our classes by gender, social and academic strengths and needs.

I would like to thank our wonderful caretaking staff for always working extra hard to keep our school clean and safe each day for us. I know their work never ends and they will be working hard this summer to get Adam Beck ready for September. My heartfelt thanks go out to Mr. Mills, Mr. Kingston and Mr. Epitropou. I would also like to thank Michelle and Margie who have been my right hands in the office and who work so hard to keep the school and office running efficiently.
I would like to extend a big thank you to all of this year’s School Council members for all their hard work. Jeny Nussey, Karen McMullin and Julie Middleton and other school council executives and volunteers who have worked so hard this year as our School Council Chairs and I have appreciated the knowledge, support and wisdom they have brought to the roles.
Today we enjoyed our 2018 End of Year Video with the entire school and it brought back many fond memories of this past school year. Thank you to the David & Michelle Hooper–Lavoie and their family for putting together an amazing end of year video. We know how much hard work goes into this!
The staff at Adam Beck joins me in wishing all of our Adam Beck families a safe and fun summer. Principal Yee and the Adam Beck staff look forward to seeing all of you back at school on September 4th, 2018
Cheers
K. Yee
