The Wellness Room is Open!
The Adam Beck Student Wellness Room serves as a sanctuary within the educational environment, dedicated to nurturing the mental and emotional well-being of students. Its primary purpose is to provide a therapeutic and supportive setting where students can engage in self-calming activities, thereby enhancing their overall sense of emotional balance and resilience.
1. Sensory Calming Environment: The Student Wellness Room is intentionally designed to create a soothing atmosphere for students. It incorporates a range of sensory elements to help students calm their senses. This includes carefully chosen visual stimuli, such as calming colours and imagery, as well as auditory elements like gentle music or nature sounds. Additionally, tactile objects may be provided to engage the sense of touch in a calming manner.
2. Low-Stimulus Area: One of the key functions of this space is to offer a low-stimulus environment. It is a place where students can escape the hustle and bustle of the school environment and find respite from sensory overload. The room is intentionally free from distractions, allowing students to focus on self-care and relaxation.
3. Mindfulness and De-Stressing Activities: The Student Wellness Room is equipped with resources and materials that promote mindfulness and stress reduction. Students can engage in activities such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or guided imagery to help alleviate stress and anxiety.
4. Problem-Solving and Peer Interaction: While the room is primarily designed for individual self-care, it can also serve as a safe space for students to engage in peer interactions when necessary. It can be used for collaborative problem-solving or as a quiet area for students who need to reduce interpersonal tension.
5. Clearly Defined Expectations: To ensure that students make the most of the room, clear expectations are established. Students are informed about acceptable behaviours within the room and what they can expect in terms of furnishings, lighting, and sound levels. They are also provided with a list of two to three consistent activities they can engage in to support their emotional needs, such as reading a book, utilizing a calming toolkit, or expressing themselves through art and provided guided activities such as making their own calm jar.
